3 ) Hostels are noisy and disruptive place to study.

4 ) Check the safety of the accommodation, there are night classes and you may need to get home in the dark.

5 ) Check how and who is maintaining the premises.

6 ) Confirm parking facility (if you have a car). Parking in the street is not recommended.

7 ) You will be asked to submit a deposit when you pay your first months rent. Make sure you get a receipt and that the landlord is clear what is required to get the full amount back.

8 ) It is sometimes better to work through a letting agency that can assist between you and the landlord.

9 ) Submit a list of any damages you see in the premises when you move in ( as this may be taken off your deposit when you move out).

10 ) Beware of staying with first year students, they have the most parties and failures

You are studying at the Nelson Mandela University and you need a place to rent?

Most of the student accommodation is in the Summerstrand area of Port Elizabeth as it offers close proximity to the Nelson Mandela University, shops and beach entertainment areas.

Most shops and required facilities can be reached by foot in the Summerstrand area. There is a Pick n Pay, First National Bank, CNA, liquor store, Port Elizabeth casino and internet cafe close to the university.

The university hostels have tended to be a problem due to noise and security. Granny flats or homes are the better option and can be rented in Summerstrand. This also provides a safer environment for the student to stay near a home or family.

10 000 students stay off campus at the Nelson Mandela University. Parents do prefer to accomodate there children in protected environment and therefoe choose smaller and homes.

These are a few frequently asked questions with links that will assist you make a good choice. Commercial Rent The main hubs are Walmer (Main Rd and Heugh Rd) and Newton Park (Cape Rd). These are safe and convenient business zones. Square meter price can vary defendant on the access to traffic, building/finish quality or placement. Private Rent Suburbs of Port Elizabeth ? First assess what your travel is centered around e.g. If you have children at school, look at where the schools are in Port Elizabeth and then stay near them. If you are a student at the N.M.M.U., the suburb of choice would be Summerstrand for student accommodation. Summerstrand is close to the beach but can be a problem during soccer tournaments (traffic) and if you stay to close to the University (party noise). Town houses offer fair protection from crime and low maintenance, suburbs Lorraine and Charlo have many townhouse complexes. Advisable not to rent near bushy areas, as they are susceptible to break-ins. Staying near Cape Road can be difficult during rush hours and congestion. Make sure you know were squatter areas are, as these can tend to have higher crime. Walmer does offer advantage as low costing housing is nearby for staff. In the CBD areas (Newton Park and Walmer) it is advisable to have secure parking. Student Rent The suburb of summerstrand is best suited for accommodation for students. The rental ranges from, R1500 – R2000 per month and is defendant on facilities. Most of the student accommodation is in the Summerstrand area of Port Elizabeth as it offers close proximity to the Nelson Mandela University, shops and beach entertainment areas.

What accommodation is pet friendly in PE?
Most hotels are not pet friendly in PE. The best would be to try a BB or guest house. Recommended pet friendly accommodation in PE click here.

What do I need to bring for my Cat or Dog when going to PE?
Would recommend there bowls, blanket and a toys. The establishment might have teh basics and it is also good for them to have there own smell.

Should I get them name tagged or chip placed?
Due to a new environment pets may be disorientated and get lost. Especially during holidays in Port Elizabeth tend to have firework dispalys at teh beach which causes great distress. We would definatally get them tagged with name and conact number (cell no not home cause you travelling). You can also register your lost dog at lostdogs.co.za

Are there vets in Port Elizabeth should my pet get sick ?
Yes, Port elizabeth has very good vetenary support. Can recommend teh following vets:
1) Dr Ferreira, Dr Venter, Dr Kamfer 0415814000
2) 9TH AVENUE VETERINARY CLINIC 041 581 4394

How close is beach accommodation to PE Airport?

The accommodation on the beachfront consist of up market hotels.

The distance is relatively short (10km). Can I get a taxi at the PE airport?

Yes, there are taxi and car hire. The directions to the Beach are easy and you only need to follow the signs.

Is the accommodation safe on the Port Elizabeth Beachfront?

Yes. Depends on places. I would recommend that you not walk on your own at night. What type of accommodation is on the beachfront? There are variety of accommodation like Bed and Breakfast, Lodges, Hotels, Flats and low budget rooms.

Where would be the best place to stay at the beachfront?

The Port Elizabeth casino offers the widest range of entertainment and has excellent security presence during the night time. The casino has also a beautiful beach and recreation area. I would recommend staying close to the casino area.

Port Elizabeth has a variety of accommodation. This includes Hotels, Motels, back packer lodges and bed and breakfast accommodation.

Traveling to Port Elizabeth by airplane, you will be landing in the suburb of Walmer. There is a vast amount of excellent bed and breakfast accommodation in Walmer (radius of 3 km). You are also only +/- 5 km form the beach. Shopping facilities in Walmer are the safest and have the best variety in Port Elizabeth.

Traveling to Port Elizabeth from Cape Town, on the N2 means you will be entering Port Elizabeth through suburb Kabega Park, Cotswold and Newton Park. These suburbs are generally out of the way of the entertainment zone of Port Elizabeth and relatively far away from the beach (15 km).

Traveling to Port Elizabeth on the N2 from East London/Cradock. You will find good accommodation is in the Summerstrand, Humerail and Humewood suburbs. These suburbs are closer to the beach/sea (walking distance, 3km radius). These suburbs are well centered around the casino, beach front and eating places. These suburbs have the main hotels and beach bed and breakfasts.

Tips and questions to help choose accommodation in Port Elizabeth, South Africa:
1 ) Ask for secure parking (not on the street).
2 ) Check web site to see the accommodation standard.
3 ) Check if affiliated to touring associations.
4 ) Check to see if they have TV / DSTV.
5 ) Is the bathroom shared or en-suite.
6 ) Is your room separate to the main house.
7 ) What is for breakfast ?
8 ) Is there any extra charge for linen to be cleaned ?
9 ) Is there a place for the children to play (if applicable) ?
10 ) How close are they the beach, Walmer Park, Casino or Airport ?
11 ) Can I lock my room?
12 ) Am I sharing any of the facilities?
13 ) Is the linen cleaned after every guest?
14 ) Is there a security button for emergencies?
15 ) Do they offer transport to and from airport?
16 ) Laundry services?
17 ) Babysitting services?

1) Web server costing.
This is “hiring” space where your web site sits 24/7. Normally to connect directly to a server company for entry level +/- R19 pm + setup R49 + own domain R80-140. If you require higher function on website i.e CMS and videos, costing is R99 pm.

2) Graphics and text procurement costing.
Taking photo’s / editing photos / typing up pages / logos. Cost can be saved if done or arranged by client. It is important to collect all information and media before web design starts.

3) Design costing
Page concept design and final design cost can be lessened if done by client i.e. in Word or Power Point. The first step is to establish a concept page and the rest of the pages follow.

4) Maintenance cost.
How often and what needs to be updated also has a cost. Sites that require +/- 4 updates per year eg. change of phone number or address should have no maintance cost or contract. It is recommended to have a Content Management System (CMS) if there is a high level of maintenance and updates.
Thereare always cheaper options out there but is dependent on workmanship detail and business continuity (fly by night web design companies ?).

It is better to meet to see what you have in mind and confirm the work that will need to be done before giving completed cost.

Feel free to give a call and we can meet for coffee.

There are approximately 3 million users online in South Africa and it comprises of 1 % of the world market. South Africa is the largest user of google search engine on the African continent.

Not all users are active users and those that use the internet once a month cannot be worthy of economic consideration. In South Africa, the internet is less convenient for browsing and is mainly used for email. This is because of the computer prices, poor infrastructure, slow internet speeds and high telephone costs.

For this reason aggressive marketing and effective web design is essential to make web sites work in the South African internet user base. Although South African internet has shortcomings, there are industries that are benefiting on the net in South Africa.
